Chaikin Money Flow (CMF)
The Chaikin Money Flow indicator measures the accumulation and distribution of a security by analyzing the volume flow.
Calculation: CMF is calculated using the following steps:
- Money Flow Multiplier (MF Multiplier): Calculate the MF Multiplier using the formula: [ MF Multiplier = rac{{(Typical Price - Low) - (High - Typical Price)}}{{High - Low}} ]
- Money Flow Volume (MF Volume): Calculate the Money Flow Volume by multiplying the MF Multiplier by the volume: [ MF Volume = MF Multiplier imes Volume ]
- Accumulation Distribution Line (ADL): Compute the Accumulation Distribution Line (ADL) by multiplying the Money Flow Volume with the price change: [ ADL = MF Volume imes \Delta{Close} ]
- Sum of ADL and Sum of Volume: Calculate the rolling sum of ADL and volume over a specified period.
- Chaikin Money Flow (CMF): Finally, divide the Sum of ADL by the Sum of Volume to get the Chaikin Money Flow. [ CMF = rac{{ ext{{Sum of ADL}}}}{{ ext{{Sum of Volume}}}} ]
Interpretation:
- CMF > 0: Indicates buying pressure or accumulation.
- CMF < 0: Indicates selling pressure or distribution.
- Confirmation of Trends: CMF can be used to confirm trends identified by other technical indicators.
- Divergence Analysis: Divergences between CMF and price movements can signal potential trend reversals.
- Subjectivity: Interpretation of CMF can be subjective and requires understanding of market dynamics.
- Whipsaws: CMF may produce false signals during choppy or sideways markets.
- Confirmation Tool: Use CMF as a confirmation tool in conjunction with other technical indicators.
- Divergence Analysis: Look for divergences between CMF and price movements to anticipate potential trend reversals.
